Who's Next after The Lizard? Another Ten Villains for Spider-Man to Face

What a tangled web he weaves... Whilst he’s known to many as your ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’, the web-slinger is never shy in attracting a vast array of dangerous enemies, each with their own unique way to take down the red-and-blue spandex-clad saviour. In the impending The Amazing Spider-Man, the hero’s famous foe, The Lizard, finally hits the screen after a Sam Raimi trilogy that contained Dr Curt Connors only to leave the reptile in the shadows. As a character fans have been vying for since Connors first came into contact with Maguire’s Peter Parker, wishes have finally been fulfilled. Future prospects are bright, too, and here are some possible future foes for Marvel to sink their teeth into now that Spider-Man has received the reboot treatment.

ScorpionScorpion AKA Mac Gargan

A foe in the similar vein of The Lizard, Mac Gargan becomes Scorpion after a deal with The Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson. Despite a lack of Jameson in the reboot, the film world has been known to tinker with origins and this would be no different. He defeated Spider-Man on two occasions, could he be the enemy to see Peter Parker finally against the odds and struggling to save those around him?

Vulture AKA Adrian Toomes

Creating a harness that allowed the ability of flight as well as providing superhuman abilities, Adrian Toomes turned to a life of crime as Vulture. Using the harness as a weapon, Vulture is a testing foe, able to test Spider-Man to the limit in aerial battle, a factor that could be a welcome change from standard combat. At an elderly age, Toomes would provide Spidey with a more cunning and challenging opposition than previously seen. Wouldn't John Malkovich make good casting, too?

Rhino AKA Aleksei Sytsevich

Despite being among the less intelligent Spider-foes, Rhino would certainly prove a force to be reckoned with, provided Marvel don’t give him the Juggernaut treatment a la Vinny Jones in X Men: Last Stand. Questions would be posed as to the ability of Rhino to stand as a main villain but combined with others he may prove to be a winner.

KravenKraven The Hunter AKA Sergei Kravinoff

As the ultimate predator, Kraven The Hunter has at his disposal superhuman strength, sense and skill, and is a huge danger to our webbed hero. Thrust into the world of movies, Kraven’s lust for hunting could turn Manhattan into a concrete jungle where Spider-Man turns into the prey, constantly forced to look over his shoulder. Possibly the most intriguing possibility of all villains, a Kraven versus Spidey hunt to the death could prove a mouth-watering prospect.

Shocker AKA Herman Schultz

The talented Herman Schultz became Shocker after his latest bank job went wrong and prison beckoned. Creating and wielding a pair of gauntlets, Shocker has the ability to shoot high frequency air blasts at anyone or anything in his path, a tough obstacle to oppose. With Spider-Man almost powerless when in range of this attack, a battle between the two would provide an entertaining clash.

Electro AKA Maxwell Dillon

Gaining his powers after being electrocuted in the process of fixing electrical lines, Electro is a recurring thorn in Spider-Man’s side and among the most recognizable foes due to his green and yellow attire.

Venom AKA Eddie Brock

As one of Spider-Man’s most infamous foes, Venom will surely be a featured villain in future films. With the reboot now in place, there's opportunity for gradual foundations to be built for Eddie Brock as a character with an eventual reveal of the symbiote-engulfed force of evil. After Raimi’s forced inclusion in Spider-Man woefully failed, the new Spider-Man universe needs redemption with a worthy representation of a classic comic book character.

MysterioMysterio AKA Quentin Beck

Long-rumoured to cameo in the Sam Raimi films. Bruce Campbell was attached to star as Mysterio, but it never came to light. Fast forward to a new Spider-Man world and Mysterio could well fit in. An illusionist who hindered the webslinger at every opportunity, Mysterio could provide both comic relief and some fantastic special effects if done right. It would remain to be seen, though, if the crazed Beck could be a worthy adversary to hold an entire film.

Carnage AKA Cletus Clay

Following the symbiote story arc, Carnage could take the mantle after a Venom appearance and provide Spider-Man with his most visceral enemy yet. A tough task as Carnage is known to be an extremely violent character but if an unrelenting Bane can be captured in a 12A picture then the same can be applied for Marvel’s big bad.

Green Goblin AKA Norman Osborn

The Green Goblin will forever be one of the most notable Spider-Man villains, if only for the fact that he is responsible for the death of Peter Parker’s first love, Gwen Stacy. Suffice to say, with Stacy now the leading lady in the reboot a Goblin reunion could fit perfectly into the jigsaw. After all, Oscorp Industries is at the heart of the events in Manhattan and Osborn is the man behind the renowned company. A Green Goblin return also opens up scope for a first movie appearance for the Hobgoblin, another notoriously difficult opponent for Peter Parker.
