Lost in The Multiplex

Green Lantern trailer

25 May

Spectacular effects abound in the new Green Lantern trailer that emerged from Warner Brothers yesterday, writes James Robinson. It’s a lengthy one, made up primarily of a portentous, Superman 1-referencing back-story, included no doubt to make up for the sad fact that GL is one of the less beloved DC superheroes.

As a result there’s not much of Ryan Reynolds in the lead role to pass judgement on. Once or twice he looks suspiciously gormless, particularly when muttering ‘woah’ after a first bash on his new superpowers, but his recital of the character’s famous oath is quite rousing:

In brightest day, in blackest night

No evil shall escape my sight

Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power…
Green Lantern’s light!

Trust me, it sounds much less prissy than it reads.

The potential 3D effects look amazing too; there’s lots of futuristic cityscapes, flying rocks and flashing lights to really get the eyeballs pulsating.

The film hits US and UK multiplexes on 17 June. I’ll be there; looks ace. It’s nice to see some new blood in among the tiring franchised sequels.
