Town Scribe Is Playing with The Boys, Tapped For Top Gun 2

Tom Cruise Top Gun 2

While I have a very high tolerance for cheese in my film diet, and am a sucker for many an 80s action movie, I have never had any love for Hot Shots remake Top Gun. Nothing gets me in a rage like the news of another pointless sequel (particularly one that is almost three decades after the original) so you can imagine the pain and anguish I have gone through over recent months following reports that Top Gun 2 is in the works.

However, one tidbit of information that has prevented me from hurling my laptop against the wall in frustration is that Peter Craig has been brought onboard for writing duties. One of the best films I have seen is recent years is Ben Affleck’s The Town, which Affleck directed, starred in and co-wrote. A heist movie in a similar vein to Heat, as well as edge of the seat action scenes the film’s narrative was driven by the dramatically evolving relationships between the richly crafted characters. This may sound ambiguous but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it, check it out of you haven’t.

Anyway, I digress – Peter Craig was one of the writers on The Town so given the fact that in different hands the heist drama could have ended up as a cheesy stinker suggests that Top Gun 2 could have something going for it. Regardless of the finished article I’m sure the resulting gross will give Mr. Cruise, who will be reprising his role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, plenty more to smile about.

Having worked as a financial and consumer journalist over the last eight years David decided to stick it to the man by going freelance in 2010. Since then he has mainly been commissioned to write about, er, finance and after a hard day dissecting the latest chapter in the ongoing economic meltdown rather than sticking a gun in his mouth he likes to relax by watching films. His favourite films of all time are Heat, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Aliens and can't wait for Hollywood to remake those classics. Hopefully that's a joke that he won't live to regret making...
