Originally starting life as a spoof trailer appearing in 2007 movie Grindhouse, Machete was released in 2010 to positive reviews and has very quickly achieved cult status. Danny Trejo has again signed on to appear in the sequel and a planned third entry, provisionally titled Machete Kills Again.
Sheen is the latest star to sign up for Rodriguez’s return to exploitation cinema, after Sofia Vergara (New Year’s Eve) and Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Colombiana) were both cast, alongside Sheen’s fellow troubled star Mel Gibson.
And who is Sheen playing?
He’s playing the President of the United States.
Seriously. That’s true.
It’s a remarkable bit of casting that, if it comes off, could prove to be an absolute stroke of genius from Rodriguez. Giving both Gibson and Sheen roles in the film shows that Machete Kills is going for the double-whammy of disgraced stars; you certainly can’t excuse Rodriguez of lacking in ambition or being unwilling to take risks. Whether it will prove a masterstroke remains to be seen.
Machete Kills is set for cinema release in 2013.
