Seth MacFarlane Gets In Character For Ted

26 Jun

Ted - Movie Banner 01 - Mark Wahlberg Seth MacFarlane

Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Adventures of Tintin. All of these big tentpoles incorporate sophisticated motion capture technology to bring their creations to life, making it possible to record and render (incomplete) effects on set. Now, Seth MacFarlane has used that same technology to give the world a teddy bear simulating fellatio. Potential: Realised.

Ted, the Family Guy creators live action debut, required extensive effects work to shoot scenes between Mark Wahlberg and the MacFarlane-voiced bear, and this Funny or Die feature reveals just how they achieved that.

It's elaborate, to say the least, but the motion capture approach allows MacFarlane to really invest in a character and not just absent-mindedly reel out zingers in a sound recording booth. It's remarkably thorough, clever (and likely insanely expensive) work for a raunchy comedy and I admire the ambition.

Ted will be released August 1st.

He fell in love with movies after a double-bill of The Empire Strikes Back & Return of The Jedi at the tender age of four. His favourite film is Goodfellas, his favourite director is Martin Scorsese, his favourite actor is Paul Newman. Caught you off guard there, eh? You were expecting Robert De Niro or something.
