Epic Fail? How To Screw Up A Great Trailer In A Matter of Seconds

Epic - 2013 movie trailer

It has been quite some time since I saw a movie trailer so absolutely shit the bed at the last minute, but 20th Century Fox's Epic has managed this with gusto.

For two whole minutes we are transported to a fantastical, beautifully realised world with some truly evocative images backed by an ethereal soundtrack building to a powerful crescendo. This is bold and magical and, most importantly, it looks like it is taking its conceit seriously.

Then a slug says "Dude."

God damn you, Hollywood. You almost had it.

Most mainstream Western animation seems absolutely incapable of sincerity, in fact I think they must be violently allergic to it, given how quickly they resort to gimmicky (and often downright poor) voice casting and lazy comic relief.

"Something we would not expect to speak in contemporary slang does just that; expectations are confounded and humour is produced! Ha haa!" - Random Exec Idiot

"Also, if we can cast some chart musicians with no discernible acting abilities, we can use their music on the soundtrack!" - Other Random Exec Idiot

Epic - musicians cast

They proceed to high five.

Epic will be released 24th May 2013. We have almost a year to accept all of this greatness-tainting mediocrity.

He fell in love with movies after a double-bill of The Empire Strikes Back & Return of The Jedi at the tender age of four. His favourite film is Goodfellas, his favourite director is Martin Scorsese, his favourite actor is Paul Newman. Caught you off guard there, eh? You were expecting Robert De Niro or something.
