Frozen follows Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell), a girl who allies herself with Kristoff, 'a daring mountain man' and sets off on a quest to free her kingdom from an eternal winter, caused by the Snow Queen (Idina Menzel). The images are predictably heavy on the blue end of the colour spectrum, but the film is already starting to look like a great new addition to the Disney canon.
Broadway songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have signed up to write original songs for the movie with Tarzan director Chris Buck at the helm. Although I still have a place in my heart for Disney's more traditional 2D animation, the new computer-generated films have been a visual treat, especially Tangled, so hopefully Frozen will follow suit.
The Disney princess has continually evolved over time from the simpering, needing-to-be-rescued tradition of Sleeping Beauty or Snow White to the considerably more ass-kicking, intelligent heroines like Belle or Rapunzel. Hopefully Anna will be more in line with the latter because, in my experience, the princess you class as your favourite when growing up will say a lot about you in any future Disney-related conversation.
Frozen is set to hit cinemas in November 2013.
