radcliffe the woman in black

Whilst not exactly being either a fan of horror films or Daniel Radcliffe, one film I will definitely be rushing out to the cinema to see next year is The Woman in Black. Having a rather over active imagination, I have always been a believer in the “less is more” approach to the supernatural genre.

Many, many years ago I was subjected to an adaptation by my secondary school English teacher that scared the bejesus out of me and I still haven’t really recovered from. Since then I have read the novel it was based on (written by Susan Hill) and seen the stage version twice and it still doesn’t fail to scare.

The story revolves around a young wizard, I mean solicitor, by the name of Arthur Kipps who is sent to a small seaside village to settle the estate of an old widow. The lawyer finds the townspeople reluctant to talk about or go near the woman's dreary home and no one will explain or even acknowledge the menacing woman in black he keeps seeing. Ignoring the townspeople's warnings, he goes to the house where he discovers its horrible history and becomes ensnared in its even more horrible legacy. Woo ha ha ha. Scared yet?!

Judging by the trailers so far it looks as though the filmmakers are getting the right balance between atmosphere and shocks. Anyway have a look here (via TotaFilm) but make sure you watch it at work and not at home before you go to bed! I’d also advise anyone who is interested to take a peek on Amazon for the 1989 version, or at least read the reviews if you don’t want to take my word for it. The new adaptation is out in February 2012.

Having worked as a financial and consumer journalist over the last eight years David decided to stick it to the man by going freelance in 2010. Since then he has mainly been commissioned to write about, er, finance and after a hard day dissecting the latest chapter in the ongoing economic meltdown rather than sticking a gun in his mouth he likes to relax by watching films. His favourite films of all time are Heat, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Aliens and can't wait for Hollywood to remake those classics. Hopefully that's a joke that he won't live to regret making...
